In 2009, the Nanaimo Disability Resource Centre hosted a two week introductory computer training course for the blind and visually impaired sponsored by the Canadian Council of the Blind. It's success sparked a new initiative and our commitment to an ongoing skill development program for blind and low vision students.

You start with individual coaching with an instructor at the DRC. We work with you from where you are today and assist you to reach your goals as a computer user. As you become comfortable using specially designed software such as screen magnifiers and voice readers, you will experience new confidence. New possibilities emerge. Over time, you may wish to use your new tools and capabilities to join one of our group classes which focus on individual aims but provide the enjoyment of sharing the experience with others.

Students feel a sense of freedom to be able to use the computer to find information and communicate with friends and family - opening doors that were previously closed.

In April 2010, we received a grant from the City of Nanaimo to purchase computers and software especially for teaching blind and low vision students.
